The fastest racquet sport
For many people, badminton brings to mind a gentle game played in elegant gardens by well-to-do ladies in huge dresses. In fact:
- at an elite level, badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world, with the shuttle being clocked at over 320 kmh
- a world-class badminton match lasts half as long as an equivalent tennis match, but in that time players typically run twice as far, and play twice as many strokes
- badminton is an Olympic event. In 1992, more than 1 billion people watched the Olympic final, a bigger audience than for the soccer, hockey or basketball finals
- it is one of the most popular sports in the world, particularly in the UK, and most Scandinavian and Asian countries. Worldwide, arguably only table tennis has more registered players.
Great fun and fitness
Of course, not all of us want to be professional players. The good news is, badminton is the perfect game for people of all ages and abilities.
- Whatever your experience or fitness, you’ll pick up the game quickly
- Playing doubles, you’ll be able to participate in exciting, competitive games straight away
- You’ll find that badminton is excellent for your physical and cardiovascular fitness
- Badminton is a whole of body workout which develops flexibility and strength, but injuries are uncommon (we haven’t lost anyone yet!)
